NYSEG Ithaca MGP Site Walking Trail

Major Project Tasks:    

  • Creation of a site walking trail on a former MGP site
  • Work performed at an active municipal waste water treatment plant
  • Performance of utility clearance prior to commencement of work
  • Closure of existing bike path while ensuring the work area was closed to public traffic with physical barriers and signage
  • Protection of existing monitoring wells while performing construction 
  • Grading of the recreational path using existing impacted soils to achieve final grades
  • A balanced site was achieved to ensure no excess soils were generated for off-site disposal
  • After geotextile was placed on the centerline of the path a 12” cap was constructed above the geotextile consisting of 9” of structural fill and 3” of top soil
  • Site restoration - hydro seeding & mulch were placed on all disturbed grounds
  • Paving of the path and new fencing were performed by the City of Ithaca contractor

Significant Project Obstacles:

  • Coordination of work while not disturbing vehicular & pedestrian traffic
  • Maintaining work without impeding operations of local markets and the City of Ithaca’s water treatment plant personnel
  • Project time constraints – completion of work before paving plants ceased operation for the winter
