Petroleum Soil Excavation North Jersey
Projects / March 6, 2020
Using trench boxes as excavation support, Abscope completed a petroleum impacted soil excavation project at a former gas station in Northern, New Jersey.
The project had many challenges. One of the toughest challenges was excavating to a depth of 14 feet below grade in a high ground water table without dewatering. Excavation of the impacted soil below the water table “in the wet” (without dewatering) was chosen as a cost saving remedial measure and eliminated dewatering and costly offsite water disposal.
Crews were also faced with several live utilities that required temporary abandonment, rerouting, and re-installation. Additionally, part of the excavation was performed adjacent to a utility pole near a busy intersection and a pole support was required using a bucket truck.
